Updates from San Yu Adventist School (SYAS) - 22 May 2020

22 May 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students,

Updates from San Yu Adventist School (SYAS)

We hope that our students are able to take a short break to enjoy Term 2 holidays before Term 3 commences on 2 June.  Like government schools, in order to protect our students, we will further enhance safe management measures.  Thus, besides the existing measures of regular temperature screenings and sanitising of hands and high-touch surfaces, students will likely to return to school on a rotation basis.  Students from graduating cohorts - Primary 6 and Secondary 4 levels will likely to attend school daily, while other cohorts will likely to rotate weekly, alternating between Home-Based Learning (HBL) and returning to school for lessons.  More information will be shared once the governing body of private education institutions, the Committee of Private Education, gives us the green light.

In the meantime, our students should be mentally prepared for an exciting term of learning ahead.  We look forward to seeing our students returning to SYAS fresh-faced and physically well-rested.  They should be neat and tidy in appearance.  For those who are apprehensive about visiting hairdressers due to the COVID-19 situation, we will engage our teaching staff to trim students’ hair to ensure that students look sharp and ready for learning.

Stay safe and God bless.

Updates from San Yu Adventist School (SYAS) - 30 April

30 April 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students,

Updates from San Yu Adventist School (SYAS)

Thank you for working with our teachers to help your child/ward learn as much as possible during the home-based learning (HBL) journey.  It has not been easy for all of us and we can give ourselves a pat on the shoulders for putting in our best effort in meeting different challenges head on.  Our last HBL day will be on 4 May 2020 and we look forward to seeing all students on 2 June 2020.

Please refer to the following updates for a better understanding of some of the major activities that will take place in Term 3:

  1. Revised Academic Calendar in Term 3

SYAS’ revised calendar will be released during the middle of May 2020.  We regret to announce that the annual Sports Day is cancelled due to safe social distancing measure.  However, we will still carry out many main activities such as the annual National Day celebration, Parent-Teacher Conference and Teachers’ Day celebration.

2. Term 3 Progress Report Card

The main objective of the HBL is to ensure that teaching and learning can continue to take place in the midst of the Circuit Breaker period.  Students are assessed for learning regularly but minimal assessments of learning assignments are given.  The school wants to give students time and space to explore and adapt to different modes of teaching and presentation.

When students return to school in Term 3, their learning will be assessed and the progress report card will be issued at the end of the term.  The calculation of the 2020 academic year results will be as follows:

  • Primary 1: Term 1 10%; Term 3 30%; Term 4 10% and Term 4 continuous assessment 50%
  • Primary 2 to Secondary 3:  Term 1 10%; Term 3 20% and Prelim/ Year-end Exam 70%
  • Secondary 4:  100% Prelim Exam

3. Student Travel Declaration Update

Most, if not all, students have declared their travel plans via the ASKnLearn portal.  If there is a change to the original declaration, students should update their travel declaration plans via the same portal and inform SYAS at [email protected]

Students should not travel out of Singapore, unless in emergency cases or on compassionate grounds. Please seek approval from SYAS at [email protected] before confirming travels plans when facing such situations.

Do take note that students holding different types of passes will probably face greater difficulty in obtaining entry approval when they wish to return.  As the COVID-19 situation can be volatile, students who travel may have to be put under quarantine or stay at home orders upon their return, and miss lessons  when school starts on 2 June 2020.

Let us continue to offer our thanksgiving to God for His blessings and protection.

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students,

We thank God for His protection in keeping us safe so that we are able to carry out home-based learning (HBL) during this circuit breaker period.  The Ministry of Education, in a joint MOE-SEAB press release, informed the public about changes to the school term and holidays.  As a result, SYAS will make the following changes:

  1. Revised Academic Calendar in Term 3
  • 5 May 2020 to 1 June 2020: Term 2 school holidays
  • 2 June 2020: Start of Term 3
  • 20 July 2020 to 26 July 2020: Mid-term break
  • 6 September 2020: End of Term 3

Our last HBL day will be on 4 May 2020 and we look forward to seeing all students on 2 June 2020.

2. Re-scheduling of O Level Mother Tongue Chinese and Malay examinations

Our secondary 4 graduating students are to take note of the following changes:

  • Papers 1 and 2 – shift from 1 June 2020, 8 am to 18 June 2020, 2pm
  • Listening Comprehension – shift from 21 July 2020 to 27 July 2020

3. Removal of Common Last Topics (CLT) from PSLE and GCE O Level Subjects

  • The CLT will be removed from the national examinations this year. The CLT is a set of topics from a syllabus identified by MOE that would be taught last by all schools towards the end of the academic year.
  • Examples of CLT to be removed include "Interactions within the Environment" for PSLE Science and “Vectors” for O-level Mathematics.
  • The CLT will still be taught, but not be examinable.

Besides the information found in the press release, SYAS subject teachers will inform their students if more subjects are included when SYAS receives updates.

4. Student Travel Declaration

All students are to declare their travel plans by 4pm, 29 April 2020 via the ASKnLearn portal.  Students should not travel out of Singapore, unless in emergency cases or on compassionate grounds. Please seek approval from SYAS at [email protected] before confirming travel plans when facing such situations.

Once again, stay safe and healthy.  Let us thank God for His blessings and continue to pray for frontliners who give us their selfless service.

Temporary Suspension of ZOOM sessions

12 April 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students,

Temporary Suspension of ZOOM sessions

On one hand, we are heartened to know that most, if not all, of our students have engaged in meaningful home-based learning (HBL).  We are also thankful for guardians and parents who have shown understanding and patience in working with us to solve technical issues in the past week.

On the other hand, we regret to inform all of you that ZOOM sessions will be suspended from 13-17 April as the Ministry of Education looks into breaches involving obscene images.  Rest assured that our teachers will continue to plan and execute quality online and offline learning tasks for our students.  Instead of ZOOM sessions indicated in the students’ HBL weekly lesson plans, students can follow the instructions given by their subject teachers (in ASKnLearn and/or Class Dojo) to complete their learning tasks.

In the meantime, students’ attendance will be marked at 8am daily via the communication channels such as Class Dojo, WhatsaApp and WeChat parents/ guardians and students normally use to contact the form teachers.

Last but not least, stay healthy and God bless.

Safeguard Against COVID-19:  14-day Leave of Absence for Students Staying with a Person who Returned to Singapore from Overseas Travel

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students,

We would like to welcome all SYAS students back to school.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has recently announced new enhanced precautionary measures to further protect the education system. The link to the press release can be found here. SYAS has issued a letter to all students in response to the latest MOE regulation for students and parents/guardians to follow up.

Even though the above LOA regulation affects our primary school students, SYAS is taking extra precaution by extending the same LOA regulation to all secondary school students as both our primary and secondary school students share the same premises.

In the meantime, SYAS will continue to administer existing precautionary measures in school to ensure that the school remains a safe and secure environment for all.

Furthermore, we have newly purchased a thermal scanner to take the temperature in the morning and made arrangements to seat students further apart in class as well as in the canteen.

We seek your cooperation to exercise social responsibility as Singapore moves as a society to contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Important Updates from SYAS

Dear Parents/Guardians/Students,

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has recently announced new enhanced precautionary measures to further protect the education system. The link to the press release can be found here

In light of the announcement and recent developments, San Yu Adventist School (SYAS) intends to comply with the government recommendation by implementing the following measures. This list will be regularly updated as the situation evolves.

  1. SYAS will re-open for Term 2 on 23 March 2020 (Monday) as planned.
  2. Students and staff of SYAS who have been out of Singapore on or after 14 March will be issued a 14-day Leave of Absence (LOA).
  3. Students who flew back from an affected region declared by the Singapore Multi-Ministry Taskforce dated will be placed on Stay Home Notice (SHN). (See affected regions here ).
  4. Suspension of Co-curricular Activities for 2 weeks.
  5. Regular cleaning of frequently used contact points.
  6. Health checks and frequent temperature screening for all staff and students.

Many parents and guardians are concerned about why schools are not closed. SYAS will like to echo the words of the Singapore Government that closing school will disrupt many lives but the possibility of school closure will not be ruled out if it is necessary to do so. Based on the current information that we have acquired, there is only a small number of students and staff who have traveled during the March holidays.  Hence, SYAS will re-open so as not to disrupt and affect the lives of the majority of our students.

Nevertheless SYAS will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that the school remains a safe and secure environment for all.

We seek your understanding and cooperation as we move forward, in the best interest of our students.
